M Kennedy

Michael Kennedy (USA), president of the jury, is chief editor of Alpinist magazine. He was the author of several renowned first ascents in Alaska including Infinite Spur on Mount Foraker (5303m) in 1977, and Wall of Shadow on Mount Hunter (4442m) in 1994. He made the first ascent of Ama Dablam’s north-east face during the Nepalese winter season and was part of a fantastic attempt on the north ridge of Latok 1 (7145m) in the Karakoram. The team got to within 100 metres of the summit on a route that remains uncompleted to this day.

V Babanov
The recipient of two previous Piolets d’Or, Valeri Babanov (Russia/Canada) exploded onto the alpine scene in 1998 with a new route on the west face of the Drus, (recently collapsed). His career is a long list of achievements with first ascents: Eldorado (solo) on the Grandes Jorasses (1999), on Meru (solo, 2001), the south-east pillar of Nuptse (2003), a new route on Chomo Lonzo (2006), and the north-west pillar of Jannu (2007).
Valeri has left an indelible mark on the world of alpinism with his energy and kindness.

Alberto Inurrategi (Spain) is one of a number of alpinists climbing the highest peaks in alpine style today. In May 2002 he climbed the east ridge of Annapurna with Jean Christophe Lafaille and in doing so became the 10th person to climb all of the world’s fourteen 8000 metre peaks, and the 4th without oxygen. The following year the pair were received in Paris when the route was nominated for the 12th Piolets d’Or. Last year
he completed the third traverse of the Broad Peak Massif in Pakistan, alpine style, with Juan Vallejo and Mikel Zabalza.

I Papert

Ines Papert (Germany) came to the fore through ice climbing competitions before turning her hand to routes across the globe. In 2006 she climbed the route Camillotto Pellissier on the north face of Cima Grande di Lavaredo, free. Her path then took her via isolated ice falls in Canada, extreme rock in the Logan Mountains where she put up a 7c+ route, and various impressive routes in Scotland. In 2009 she climbed a difficult winter route on the north face of Kwangde in the Khumbu, and in 2011 an extreme ice route in Kirghizstan.

Liu Yong

Liu Yong (China) is a keen explorer and alpinist from Chengdu in Sichuan. He has climbed, travelled and studied in the US, and also across the Alps, Nepal and south-west Asia. A graduate of Chengdu University, Liu currently works as a mountain guide. He is a specialist in high altitude health and nutrition, and is one of the new generation of Chinese alpinists active in the Chinese mountain ranges.

A Filippini

Alessandro Filippini (Italy) is a journalist from Milan and has worked for Tuttosport and la Gazzetta dello Sport as an Olympics and alpinism specialist. He followed Reinhold Messner’s race for the 8000 metre peaks working with him for many years. Since making several films with Messner, he has continued with work on various mountaineering legends including Riccardo Cassin and Walter Bonatti.
